EXPERIMENTS DEPLOYED THIS SESSION ---------------------------------- 932 new workunits created across 80+ active hosts: CPU workunits (845 total): Feature Competition Dynamics: 329 WUs (~39%) Representation Alignment (NEW): 264 WUs (~31%) Memorization Dynamics: 251 WUs (~30%) Lazy vs Feature Learning: 1 WU (~0.1%) GPU workunits (87 total): Feature Competition Dynamics: 87 WUs (all GPU work) Hosts served include: epyc7v12 (240c), DESKTOP-N5RAJSE (192c), 7950x (128c), SPEKTRUM (72c), JM7 (64c), Dads-PC (80c), DadOld-PC (80c), Dad-Workstation (80c), and 70+ smaller hosts (4-32 cores each). NEW EXPERIMENT: REPRESENTATION ALIGNMENT DYNAMICS --------------------------------------------------- Script: representation_alignment.py Status: Deployed to 264 hosts, awaiting first results Scientific rationale: This experiment bridges two confirmed findings: 1. Lazy vs Feature Learning: Wider networks → lazier regime (confirmed, 156+ results) 2. Spectral Dynamics: SGD produces implicit low-rank regularization (confirmed, 425+ results) Key question: Do independently trained networks converge to similar representations, and does width accelerate this convergence? Methodology: - Train 4 networks with different random seeds per width config - Test widths: [32, 64, 128, 256] single-hidden-layer + [64,32] deep config - Measure CKA (Centered Kernel Alignment) between all seed pairs - Track CKA trajectory over 100 training epochs - Also measure weight distance from initialization (ties to lazy regime) Hypothesis: Wider networks produce more convergent representations (higher cross-seed CKA), supporting the lazy/NTK regime transition. This would provide a representation-space complement to the weight-space evidence from our lazy vs feature learning experiment. Reference: Raghu et al. (2017) "SVCCA"; Kornblith et al. Neural Thermodynamics v2 continues to accumulate supporting evidence. 341 additional replications on ChelseaOilman's 11-host fleet confirm cooling dynamics at all learning rates with critical LR ~0.05. 2. Feature Competition Dynamics is the newest active experiment testing gradient starvation (Pezeshki et al. 2021). Initial validation showed gradient ratio (strong/weak) = 1.39 average, wider networks up to 1.84. 329 new CPU + 87 GPU workunits deployed for cross-validation. 3. Representation Alignment Dynamics is a newly designed experiment studying cross-seed representation convergence via CKA. 264 workunits deployed. This bridges lazy/feature learning and spectral dynamics findings. 4. Lazy vs Feature Learning is at 156+ results and approaching retirement threshold (200+). Smooth width-dependent transition from feature to lazy regime confirmed across 50+ hosts. 5. Memorization Dynamics continues building cross-validation with 251 new workunits. Clean-before-corrupted learning order confirmed at all corruption levels tested. NEXT STEPS ---------- 1. Await first batch of representation alignment results (expect within 24h) 2. Analyze feature competition dynamics cross-validation as results accumulate 3. Retire lazy vs feature learning once it crosses 200 results 4. If representation alignment confirms width-CKA correlation, design follow-up studying how training hyperparameters (LR, batch size) affect representation convergence speed 5. Continue monitoring memorization dynamics for maturity KNOWN ISSUES ------------- - BOINC wu.json delivery still broken (0 bytes) — fallback seed works - Host 235 (alix): SSL CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED — skipped - Host 202 (archlinux): Same SSL issue — skipped - Host 63 (Latitude): Only 4GB RAM — skipped - Host 118 (Athlon-x2-250): Only 3GB RAM — skipped - Host 206 (MSI-B550-A-Pro): Consistent exit_status=203 errors — skipped
